30 Rock

NBC's 30 Rock is quickly becoming my new favorite show. It airs on thursdays immediately following The Office. Lately, The Office has been leaving me painfully short of my fill of comedy for the night. Of course it does completely satisfy if not exceed my drama meter. This is not to say that The Office's recent shortcomings are the reason why I watch the show. It is brilliant on its own and if it aired on a different night I would definitely still watch it. 30 Rock is about a fictional sketch comedy show created for NBC and produced in the NBC studios at 30 Rockefeller Plaza. (Hence the name) The show stars Tina Fey, who created and writes most of the show, and Alec Baldwin. They are absolutely brilliant and make the show what it is: suberb. Unfortunately it is a tough show to jump into. It is only mildly amusing if you do not understand who is who and what is going on. The show does not use extended plot lines but knowing everyone's position and how they interact with one another helps make it truly hilarious. It is not like an episode of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia or Seinfeld where 5 minutes is all you need to get aquainted. This is not to say that 30 Rock is a Lost type show where one missed episode may well be the end of understanding anything. The show also features a surprising amount of guest stars. Usually they are pretty funny but they in no way effect the show as a whole. It is Fey and Baldwin who, as a comedic duo, lift the show into the upper echelon of comedies. I have not watched enough of the show to tell if they will become a romantic interest down the road like the Jim and Pam situation on The Office. I for one hope so, but I do not know enough about the story to know if that would be weird. All in all it is an excellent show and worthy of at least 5 episodes of your time to decide whether you like it or not.
